Hello, and Welcome to The Liftup Home Page!

My name is Dick Peterson, developer of The Liftup, an ADL-assist device that lifts a disabled person into position for transfers in bathroom, bedroom or other locations.

Those of us who are disabled try to "hang in there." In my case, the expression has taken on a double meaning. I've had multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years and, as my condition worsened, I foresaw the day when I would need greater assistance with wheelchair-to-toilet transfers. I envisioned a lift which would raise me erect without any encumbrances at or below the waist. A ceiling-mounted hoist with an above-the-waist lifting harness seemed the ideal solution.

Drawing on my training as a Professional Engineer, I researched and selected a hoist that was virtually fail-safe, economical, and powerline-independent. Locating a suitable harness proved more difficult. Years of investigation led me to the Coast Guard Rescue Station here on Cape Cod. There I tested a "survivor's sling" used in helicopter rescues, then had a simpler, lighter one made by a local sailmaker.

I've been using my Liftup for more than 17 years, over 40,000 times. From the feedback I've received, it also has successfully helped many of the people who have contacted me for the plans.

If you are disabled - or know someone who is - and think The Liftup lifting and transfer device might be an answer to some of the challenges faced every day, click on the "About the Liftup" button to the left or below.

I would like to hear from you, especially if you have used The Liftup and have comments or opinions. You can leave me an e-mail message by clicking the "E-Mail the Liftup" button to the left or below.
